Why am I choosing Zero Waste
Over the past years I have become increasingly uneasy about the amount of plastic going into our landfills daily. It all started when I became aware of the huge patches of garbage in our beautiful oceans. Plastic is especially dangerous to the ocean, marine life, and our health. It doesn’t biodegrade it photodegrades which means it only gets smaller and smaller. Eventually it ends up in all eco-systems and is causing chaos to our bodies and this earth.
Over time, as I used up more and more products and threw piece after piece of plastic away, I started noticing that I was feeling guilty about the amount of plastic waste I was contributing to the world. At the time I felt I was doing my part by sorting out my recycling only to find out later that current methods of recycling aren’t really cutting it in the big picture. My soul was nagging at me to make a change and so I started making small efforts to reduce my waste by buying a reusable water bottle and trying to avoid purchasing items that contained one-time use plastic (easier said than done) but it wasn’t enough. I needed to make some bigger changes.
Fast forward to the opening of my spa. I have seen the waste coming from spas over the last decade. It isn’t more than normal, but it is still a lot of plastic waste. There are a lot of plastic containers, plastic garbage bags and plastic wrappers being put into landfills and oceans daily. As the dream of opening a spa played itself out in my visions, I felt a stronger and stronger desire to do as much as I could to reduce the amount of waste coming from my spa. I purchased compostable garbage bags and gloves, reusable cotton rounds, eco-friendly and refillable cleaning supplies and made a conscious effort to minimize waste.
I am fully committed to only using product lines that use economically sourced ingredients with packaging that is biodegradable and reusable. The product lines I meticulously selected are also big contributors to minimizing waste and all packaging from shipping the items to me is compostable or biodegradable. There is still more to do and so much of that comes from education and awareness. My goal with the products that I use at the spa and sell to clients is to have high quality ingredients that are efficient and organic while at the same time eco-friendly and sustainable for the planet. Products are sold in glass bottles that can be re-filled enabling less waste.
We currently live in a linear economy where we take resources from the earth and then dump them in a giant hole in the ground. The goal of zero waste is to move to a circular economy where we write trash out of existence. The circular economy mimics nature in that there is no trash in nature. Instead of discarding resources, we create a system where all resources can be resumed fully back into the system.
Luckily, living in the future has made that entirely possible. At Dialyn -we offer compensation for returned bottles, discounts on refilled products as well as classes to make tinctures using the bottles we already have. My goal is to do my part to get as much plastic as possible out of the eco-system.
No one is perfectly zero waste. We’re all just doing the best we can. Yet, a lot of people making small changes adds up to a massive impact.
Does one person really make a difference?
YES! You don’t vote only at the ballot box. You vote every day.
With just one small step at a time, you can greatly reduce your footprint. But, going zero waste isn’t just great for the environment, you’ll notice an improvement in your quality of life. Side effects include eating better, feeling better, saving money, and not having to take out the trash!
